Spear Drill

A favourite with nearly all those who take part, the children are introduced to the life of a soldier.

The drill varies according to the period being studied, both the Roman and Viking sessions using a shield as well as a spear.

Roman, Tudor and 17th Century drill also includes the wearing of specially made helmets.

Children in Key Stages 1 and 2 use a small, rubber-tipped spear, especially designed to allow the children to enjoy the activity in complete safety.

Students in Key Stage 3 are given a larger, blunted, metal-tipped spear, more suitable to their age and strength.

Strict safety procedures are adhered to at all times for all the students, regardless of their age and the type of spear being used.
